Texas Public Radio

Audio, video, and editorial storytelling designed for broadcast and digital audiences.

At Texas Public Radio, I produced multimedia content that brought the culture and voices of South Texas to life. My work spanned podcast production, video interviews, and oral history storytelling, combining research, writing, interviewing, and editing to create compelling content for both radio and digital platforms.

Projects included the Fiesta San Antonio podcast, B40 Sessions music interviews, and StoryCorps South Texas, where I developed and produced interview-driven stories from concept through final production.

San Antonio
Fiesta Podcast

A podcast series highlighting the culture, traditions, and experiences of Fiesta San Antonio.

  • Project Type: Podcast Research, Development, and Script Production

Fiesta San Antonio is one of the city’s most beloved cultural celebrations, blending history, food, fashion, and community traditions. Texas Public Radio launched a podcast series designed to help listeners better understand the origins and significance of Fiesta while also offering guidance on how to experience the celebration like a local.

The series is hosted by Asia Ciaravino, local arts advocate, actress, and President and CEO of SA Youth, and Angela McClendon Johnson, a marketing and public relations professional and former Fiesta queen.

  • For this project, I supported the development and production of the podcast series from concept to script.

    Key contributions included:

    • Conducting historical and cultural research on the origins and traditions of Fiesta San Antonio

    • Developing and pitching episode concepts to leadership at Texas Public Radio

    • Creating structured outlines for eight podcast episodes (20–30 minutes each)

    • Editing and refining scripts for the hosts to ensure clarity and storytelling flow

    • Coordinating and conducting interviews with historians and Fiesta experts

The goal was to create episodes that balanced historical context with engaging storytelling. My research process included reviewing academic and archival sources, identifying key traditions and themes within Fiesta, and shaping them into compelling narrative arcs for each episode.

Each episode outline was designed to guide the hosts through a structured conversation that blended cultural insight, historical storytelling, and practical recommendations for enjoying Fiesta events.

  • The series helped contextualize Fiesta San Antonio for listeners by highlighting the celebration’s history, traditions, and community significance. By grounding each episode in research and expert interviews, the podcast offered both longtime residents and new audiences a deeper understanding of the city’s signature cultural event.

B40 Interviews & Performances

In-studio sessions from the Back 40 of the TPR offices featuring audio, video, and interviews with the performers.

  • Project Type: Music Interviews, Video Production, and Digital Content

The B40 Sessions series showcases live, in-studio performances recorded in the “Back 40” space at Texas Public Radio. The project highlights the diverse sounds and artists of South Texas through live music, interviews, and behind-the-scenes storytelling.

Each session features a musical performance paired with an interview that explores the artist’s background, creative process, and connection to the regional music scene. The resulting audio and video content is distributed through Texas Public Radio’s website and YouTube channel.

  • I supported the production of B40 Sessions by coordinating artist participation and producing multimedia content for digital audiences.

    Key contributions included:

    • Booking regional bands and coordinating in-studio performance sessions

    • Conducting research on featured artists to develop thoughtful interview questions

    • Hosting and interviewing musicians for the B40 series

    • Filming live performances and interview segments in the studio

    • Editing video footage for publication on Texas Public Radio’s website and YouTube channel

    • Producing interview content that complemented the live music performances

Each session began with researching potential artists and coordinating schedules for in-studio performances. Before filming, I conducted background research on each band to develop interview questions that highlighted their influences, creative process, and role in the South Texas music community.

During the sessions, I filmed live performances and interviews, capturing both the music and the artists’ personal stories. After recording, I edited the footage into digital video packages designed for online viewing and social sharing.

  • The B40 Sessions helped spotlight emerging and established musicians from South Texas while expanding Texas Public Radio’s digital storytelling around regional arts and culture. The project combined live music performance, documentary-style interviews, and digital video production to create engaging content that celebrated the diversity of the local music scene.

StoryCorps South Texas

StoryCorps South Texas shares the oral histories of the region through conversations recorded at the StoryCorps Mobile Booth and Texas Public Radio studios.

  • Project Type: Audio Production, Editorial Curation, and Voice Work

StoryCorps South Texas shares the personal histories of people across the region, preserving meaningful conversations between family members, friends, and community members. These interviews are recorded at the StoryCorps Mobile Booth and archived at the Library of Congress as part of a national effort to document everyday American stories.

In February 2018, the StoryCorps Mobile Booth visited San Antonio to collect interviews for the Military Voices Initiative, a project dedicated to recording and preserving the stories of veterans, service members, and military families. Select interviews were produced for broadcast on Texas Public Radio News stations and published online.

  • For this project, I helped bring these stories to audiences through broadcast and digital distribution.

    Key contributions included:

    • Selecting weekly featured interviews from the StoryCorps South Texas archive

    • Editing audio recordings into concise segments for radio and web distribution

    • Writing and producing weekly featured story segments

    • Providing voice narration for broadcast and digital audio pieces

    • Preparing content for publication on Texas Public Radio platforms

Each week, I reviewed recorded interviews to identify stories that were emotionally resonant and representative of the South Texas community. Selected conversations were edited into shorter narrative segments that preserved the authenticity of the speakers while fitting radio broadcast standards.

Voice narration was recorded to introduce the stories and provide context for listeners, helping frame each piece within the broader StoryCorps initiative.

  • Through this work, local voices and personal histories from the San Antonio community were shared with a wider audience and preserved as part of the national StoryCorps archive at the Library of Congress. The weekly segments helped highlight powerful personal narratives while expanding public engagement with StoryCorps’ mission to document and preserve lived experiences.
